by The Great White Gypsy

It’s only been two days since the world lost one of it’s biggest stars, and cinephiles everywhere are still processing. If you were anything like me, you had three clear thoughts when you heard the news of Dennis Hopper’s passing, in this order:

“Wow, I didn’t even know he was sick.”
“Damn, he was a great actor”
“I haven’t seen Easy Rider in forever”

It doesn’t matter how good an actor you are, or how long and illustrious your film resume is. In the end, you will be remembered for two or three films or characters more than any others. Brando will always either be a possible contender (instead of a bum, which is what he was), or Vito Corleone from The Godfather. Peter Boyle will always be “Puttin’ on da Riiiiitz” from Young Frankenstein. Charlton Heston will always be the tallest man on the Planet of the Apes. Patrick Swayze - thanks to Family Guy - will always be “Road House!” And Dennis Hopper will always be Billy from Easy Rider. However, one need only glance at his filmography to realize that we have truly lost one of the greatest. If cinema was a conspiracy theory, Hopper would be top of the suspect list. It seems like any milestone film or major name has his fingerprints all over it.

His early work reads like an Amazon Blu-ray wishlist (hint hint, people). Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean. Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman. Apocalypse Now with Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, and Marlon Brando. And, of course, Easy Rider with Peter Fonda. It may not make your wishlist, but he was even in True Grit with John Wayne. Seriously. This guy was in movies with Jimmy Dean, Brando, and the fucking Duke! You’d think that’d be enough for him, but he decided to add David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino to his rolodex with Blue Velvet and True Romance respectively.

He probably could have stopped after those films, and been totally set for life. Unlike so many current actors, however, Hopper was a work horse. Personally, I think that’s only part of being a great actor (aside from, you know, being good at acting). The other part is not taking yourself too seriously. Hopper nailed that too. If it’s not enough that he was in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (the most ridiculous one in the series) and Waterworld (no, shut up, you did not like that movie), maybe you also remember him in Super Mario Brothers? That’s right kids, Easy Rider was fucking King Koopa in Super Mario Bros., possibly the worst/greatestofalltime video game movie in history. Did he care? Fuck no, he’s Dennis Hopper. Why else would he make a retarded action classic with Keanu Reeves? He even had some fun on TV for a while in his later years, guest starring on 24 when it was still good, and headlining the amazingly well-received Crash spinoff.

Like I said, though: you’ll always be remembered for that one iconic, life-changing roll. Easy Rider. That’s how we remember Dennis Hopper. It’s how we see him in our heads. But if we’re going to let Dennis Hopper ride off into the ether, we need to make damn sure he’s got a good crew rollin’ behind him. So here, in no particular order, are Billy and his crew of the coolest bikers in cinema history.

Billy

This was back when bikers stood for something. When they represented somebody who needed a haircut, and so much more. Freedom. Real, raw American freedom, man. They were, like, hippies, man. But, man, they were so much more. They were the badasses that weren’t trying to be badasses, the ones who jumped on the hog and sped off just because they could.

Wyatt

As awesome as Hopper’s Billy was, could you really form a biker gang without Peter Fonda? The two actors wrote the script together, and had a great chemistry on screen that sunk in even further to their characters and what life is all about. Fonda may be a little more recognizable in this roll (he didn’t have a headband and a huge moustache like Hopper), and when it comes to a long distance biker experience, the two of them would be my choice for the long haul.

Johnny

At this point, Marlon Brando’s iconic character from The Wild One would probably be that friend that constantly gets the whole group into fights over dumb shit. Every group of friends needs one of those though, and in 1953 his passionate rebellion against “whatever I got” took no prisoners. Unfortunately, like the rest of us, he’s a sucker for a dame in a skirt.

Snake

Remember when Kurt Russell was a tough guy? No, seriously, he was! In John Carpenter’s Escape from New York he fit right in with the campy, chaotic NYC of the future. Nowadays, he’s the guy in the group that everyone’s a little wary of. It’s not just the eye patch, it’s the fact that he’s unpredictable. LIke at any moment, he could pull Lee van Cleef out of his pocket and smash on fuckers. He wasn’t the same after he moved to L.A.. He changed, man. He changed.

Harley Davidson and Marlboro

There were plenty of films in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s that showed groups of teenagers banding together to save a ski lodge, or a teen center, or whatever. How many people would rip town apart, pissing everyone off from the cops to the criminals, to save a biker bar? Two. Just two. Sure, it may be the most brazen attempt at product placement in history, but these two together are unfuckwithable, and have more testosterone than the entire Brat Pack combined. This film (cleverly titled Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man) was a high point for Mickey Rourke, Don Johnson, and tough motherfuckers everywhere.

Leonard

“My friends call me Lenny. Only I ain’t got no friends.” C’mon, how awesome is this guy? A cigar smoking, dynamite packing bounty hunter that looks like he just walked out of Thunderdome. He’s armed to the teeth and freaking unstoppable, unless you happen to love Woody Woodpecker. Probably the best character in Raising Arizona, and one of the Coens’ best ever. I definitely want this guy on my side when shit goes down…as long as he stands where I can see him.

Opie

Ryan’s Hurst’s strong, silent-type character in Sons of Anarchy is the personification of what new generation bikers should be. Loyal to a fault, a family man, but ready to bust out the 9 at the slightest hint of conflict. He loves the culture, not just the stigmas. And that beard is not fucking around.

Ghostrider

You think I’m joking? Who better to ride sidecar through the afterlife than someone who’s been there? And for the record, I’m talking about the comic character, not Nick Cage’s bullshit attempt at badassery. Ghostrider’s a real badass who won’t take any shit, but his morals are solid. And since he only turns crazy at night, he’ll fit right in with all the other LSD-ers tripping balls.

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Directed by Mat Whitecross, Written by Paul Viragh
The problem with good music biopics is they are hard to see on the big screen. I must admit, I still haven’t caught The Runaways yet. This one really intrigues me because, not only are most of the cast and crew unknown, but Ian Drury and The Blockheads aren’t exactly on everyone’s iTunes Genius bar. For those of you too lazy to click a link, Ian Drury, despite having polio most of his life, rose to become an icon of British punk-rock in the 1970’s. Whitecross has done mainly documentaries to date. But the coolest thing about this film? The dude who plays Drury (Serkis) is the same dude who played Gollum in LOTR. Odd.

The Trotsky - Written and Directed by Jacob Tierney
Unless you actually watched his 2003 Dickens adaptation Twist, you have no idea who Jacob Tierney is. But we all know who Jay Baruchel is (She’s Out of my League, Real Time, Undeclared), and I for one think it’ll be awesome to see him playing a teenager who believes he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky. Even in high school, Jay’s character seeks to mirror the Russian revolutionary’s life, including exile, marriage, and ultimately his assassination. Might end up being esoterically Red, but we’ll see.

Happiness Runs - Written and Directed by Adam Sherman
Based on true events from the ‘70’s, this is Sherman’s (producer, Wristcutters: A Love Story) first big feature about a generation of children lost to the hedonism of utopian hippie communes. Forced polygamy, promiscuity, and drug use are amplified by a cinematography that apparently seeks to portray these communes as cultish. May be a bit over the top, but it’s all the proof I need that hippies are, in fact, ruining society.
I usually don’t cover the big movies unless there’s a good reason. And I think there is here. With the collapse (reboot) of the Spider-man franchise, and the skepticism surrounding Thor and Green Lantern, a lot is riding on Iron Man 2 if Marvel has any hope of keeping fans interested enough to wait for The Avengers. Favreau killed it with Iron Man and, though the previews appear to showcase his original style, the studio may have tried to cram more side plots and characters into in than a two-dollar whore (or Spider-man 3, whichever). Guess there’s only one way to find out.

Mother and Child - Written and Directed by Rodrigo Garcia
There is a fine line between making a specific film that everyone can appreciate and sympathize with, and making a categorically ethnocentric film that will alienate anyone who can’t relate to the story. Rodrigo Garcia did a great job directing In Treatment, which shows me he can handle intimate settings and complex character interaction. However, this story about three women and their experiences with the adoption process will require much more exposition in a two hour block. I hope he can pull it off.

Multiple Sarcasms - Written and Directed by Brooks Branch
Timothy Hutton has had a strange career. He won an Oscar in 1981 for his role in Ordinary People. After that, I didn’t see him in anything good until City of Industry and Playing God, both in ‘97. Then nothing again, until 2008’s Lymelife, after which he burned through The Killing Room, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Serious Moonlight, and The Ghost Writer. His recent comeback gives me hope for this character-driven drama about an unhappy man who quits his job to write a play about his life and the people in it.
Jesse Eisenberg has been a busy mofo the last couple years. Keeping up with his awkward second banana routine, he plays an aspiring poet and writer enlisted by his friend K. Binew to chronicle Binew’s last day on earth. Binew spends the day inviting everyone he meets to his “living wake”, where he plans to perform one more live act before dropping dead. The story doesn’t strike me as original, But Eisenberg is growing on me, and anything Jim Gaffigan is in is usually worth a laugh or three. Hot Pocket!!!!
I’ve been looking forward to this film for a while now. I almost stayed in Ireland an extra week just so I could see it over there first. Fitzgibbon and O’Rowe haven’t done much outside of Intermission, which wasn’t anything really special as far as Irish film goes. However, this one looks like it could be the Lock Stock of Irish cinema, which tends to flounder if it doesn’t have anti-British sentiment or the IRA to fall back on. Great cast, simple story, I still can’t wait.
Jews selling ecstasy to Israelis? How does that not sound like an awesome movie? Based on a true story, Jesse Eisenberg plays a young Hasidic man who gets mixed up with drug dealers in Brooklyn.
John Rabe - Written and Directed by Florian Gallenberger
Hurray Germans! Apparently, Schindler wasn’t the only one with a list. In this historical drama, John Rabe is a German businessman who stays in Nanking during the 1937 Japanese invasion and subsequent massacre of the Chinese in order to save as many people as he can. Looks like it could be a solid foreign flick. My only question: Does Steve Buscemi really think he can hide in obscure stuff? I can spot those eyes a mile away.
Yes, we’ve seen the story of an old guy sleeping with young women and trying to remember the “good ol’ days”. And yes, Susan Sarandon and Michael Douglas are still on quests to get some lo-fi street cred. But Koppelman and Levien directed Knockaround Guys (surprisingly good), and between them they’ve written Rounders, Runaway Jury, and The Girlfriend Experience.
Survival of the Dead - Written and Directed by George A. Romero
I’m not sure that any other director can lay claim to the kind of cult following Romero has enjoyed just from one film franchise. Keeping a dismembered hand on the wheel, Romero has managed to keep his vision out of the reach of studios and direct every film from Night of the Living Dead in 1968 to this one. And even though the last installment (Diary of the Dead) was a godawful handheld nightmare right up there with Cloverfield and Quarantine, Romero - like his hoard of undead - cannot be stopped. I’m also very, very happy this one isn’t in 3-D. I almost spent $12 to watch it early…just now.

Micmacs - Written and Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
This film has been getting a lot of good feedback from festivals all over the place. Jeunet has done a handful of good French films, and one subpar American film (Alien: Resurrection), but I do love the bandwagon. It’s about a store clerk who is shot in the head with a stray bullet, and years later gets a rag-tag bunch of quirky characters to go after two large ammunition companies. Damn surrender monkeys.

This one’s been sitting on my computer (along with Abre los ojos) for quite some time. Amenabar has done really well on his native soil, but his only other “American” film was The Others, which I still think was a funny, funny joke. Rachel Weisz is always good in ancient world period pieces, and this one looks much more politically and philosophically driven, instead of the typical Gladiator-wannabes. I should probably get on this one.
The three films he has under his belt include Creep, a cut-and-dry thriller, Severance, a tongue-in-cheek horror comedy, and Triangle, a mind-fuck with no KY. Now it appears he’s upping the anti again with this horror-mystery about a village bringing people back to life during the first black plague outbreak. I’m game.

Acts of Violence - Written and Directed by Il Kim
Revenge tales are always fun, whether the film is actually good or not. Watching your average joe go from distraught victim to harbinger of doom doesn’t usually need a great writer to pull it off. Which is good, considering this is Kim’s first attempt at…anything. He also stars as Flyn, a man who seeks vengeance on the men who raped his wife. But instead of a simple payback story, Flyn continues to rip people apart, keeping his violent secrets from his wife (Sobieski) and telling only his priest (Perlman). Can’t find more release info beyond “May 2010”, so look for it on DVD, or at the tiny cinema around the corner.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) - Written and Directed by Tom Six
I really don’t know how to feel about this one. It looks like it could be good for a few Hostile moments, and the tagline is “100% medically accurate”. However, the image of three people sewn together, ass to mouth, on their hands and knees, can’t be serious, can it? I guess it’s serious enough that IFC snatched this one up, and Tom Six is already working on the sequel, due out in 2011.

How in holy, blazing, snowball devouring hell has Jeff Bridges never won an Oscar???

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. But the question still stands. How does one of the most well-known actors of the last 50 years create iconic character after iconic character and go completely unrewarded? He was The Dude! He was Lightfoot! He was Tucker, the man with the dream! He was Wild Bill! He was Starman! For Christ’s sake, he was Tron! Ok, he wasn’t actually Tron, but Tron didn’t do shit in that movie, it was all fucking Jeff Bridges!!!! And now, he is Bad Blake.

Crazy Heart is the story of Bad Blake, an aging country music star who is obviously past his glory days. He drives his Chevy Silverado all over the Southwest playing in bowling alleys and dive bars just to make a living. He’s an alcoholic chain-smoker with a whiskey bottle full of resentment towards his agent, his protege-turned-rockstar, and himself. Along his travels, he meets a reporter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) doing a story on him, and the two become involved. And true to every country song you’ve ever heard he attempts to quit drinking, keep his woman from leaving, and make sure his truck is running smooth. You should all be ashamed of yourselves…generalizing like that.

For what it was, Crazy Heart was almost technically perfect in its simplicity. Virgin Director Scott Cooper (who also adapted the screenplay) is solid. Cinematographer Barry Markowitz (All the Pretty Horses, Sling Blade) knows how to master a camera without being overbearing. And you can’t go wrong with a score written by T-Bone Burnett (O Brother Where Art Thou?, Walk the Line). The Oscar-nominated song “The Weary Kind” is essentially the culmination of the film. If it hadn’t been sung by Colin Farrell, it might have been better. But when you watch it, you’ll understand why it’s necessary, and it’s really good.

At the risk of sounding like a groupie, Jeff Bridges is the best part of this film. He completely immerses himself in the role. Bad Blake obviously has his vices and flaws, but he is an old school country gentleman: polite, amicable, and charming. Even though you can tell he resents the hell out of playing sets in the asshole of New Mexico, on the outside he’s always a stand up guy. This helps to contrast his downfalls, showing two extreme sides of him. We first see him getting out of his truck after a long drive. He stretches, pours out half a gallon jug of piss (if you’ve ever been on a road trip, you understand this), lights a cigarette, and walks into the bar. From that point on, he’s never more than an arm’s length away from a bottle of whiskey. Perhaps this is why I felt a sense of dread even when he was lying in bed with Maggie Gyllenhaal, or taking her son out to the park.

As amazing as Bridges is, and as much as I love this film, the low point for me is the writing. I know it’s based on the novel by Thomas Cobb (which I haven’t read), but Bad Blake is such an even character throughout that, even though you see his personal developmental rollercoaster, he isn’t contrasted enough by his environment. The things he does, the mistakes he makes, never feel like they deserve the consequences they bring. Maybe this is supposed to make you sympathize more with him - like Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler - but for me it failed. The whole time, I was thinking, “I don’t understand his relationship with this character.” or, “Why is everyone angry? He didn’t really do anything wrong!” Side stories and subplots that could have been woven into the main flow seem to peter out and become irrelevant too quickly, and conflicts that were presented as crucial are underdeveloped and unexplained.

I understand why Crazy Heart wasn’t nominated for Best Picture or Best Screenplay (although with Precious and Avatar in there, it definitely could have been). However, Bad Blake is this year what Randy “The Ram” was last year, and if Bridges is snubbed again, this dude will not abide!

Final Grade: B+

I need to start reading more.

The Informers is the latest adaptation of one of Bret Easton Ellis’ novels (he wrote Less than Zero, Rules of Attraction, and American Psycho), and it’s on par with its predecessors. The story has been done in every sub culture in every decade since the 1930’s. A bunch of people living in L.A. in 1983 lead seemingly glamorous lives, full of sex, drugs, and music. But beneath the trendy, hedonistic cultural expectations lie real people with real emotional problems.

The film starts at an upscale party in Beverly Hills, where one of the “popular” kids is hit by a car and killed in front of everyone. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the main characters start to reexamine their lives and their priorities. Several different characters and storylines intersect and parallel each other. Dynamics are explored between husband and wife (Billy Bob Thornton and Kim Basinger), father and son, estranged down-and-out relatives (Brad Renfro, Mickey Rourke), and committed relationships involving orgies (all the best ones seem to).

One of the failings of American Psycho (personally my favorite Ellis adaptation) was that it was difficult to successfully portray it as a period piece set in the ‘80’s. Aside from the ridiculously large “cell phones”, it didn’t look all that different from the year 2000. The Informers, however, is 1980’s through and through. From the cinematography and editing (very well done by Petra Korner and Robert Brakey respectively) down to the period- and tone-setting soundtrack which includes Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung, Pat Benatar, and Men Without Hats (everybody look at your hands!)

There are many compelling characters in The Informers. The title is actually the name of a popular band in town for a tour during the film, and the lead singer is the typical drug-addled, oversexed icon with a failed marriage and self-destructive tendencies. Thornton and Basinger give great performances as another failed marriage giving it a second chance. Jon Foster (who actually looks like a young Christian Bale) is fed up with the superficial aspects of the high life, and wants more from his girlfriend (both of whom are sleeping with their best friend, Martin…damn ‘80’s). Even Renfro and Rourke add an interesting element to the story as part of the lower class struggling to make it in L.A.

As with most films involving intersecting storylines, however, The Informers falls into the trap of never really flushing out all of the stories or characters enough to make you feel like any significant progress is made. At crucial scenes towards the end, when characters are supposed to be having breakthrough developmental moments, it still comes off as insincere and forced. It’s bad enough to be left hanging by one plot course, but four in one film is even more dissatisfying.

Inexperienced director Gregor Jordan does a respectable job all in all, never really lacking in the technical aspects. This just seems like one of those movies that, though not a complete waste of time (like Rules of Attraction) was probably better as a novel. And seriously, with everything going on in the world right now, do I really need another movie showing me the “downside” to being rich and beautiful in L.A.? If I need a dose of that, I’ll turn on The Hills for a minute (damn those rich white people have it rough…)

Final Grade: B

My apologies for slacking on this the last two months, we’ve had our hands full. April’s looking interesting, but this is filler season between the Oscars and summer blockbuster season, so we’ll see.

Give ‘em Hell, Malone – Directed by Russell Mulcahy, Written by Mark Hosack
Before Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Russell Mulcahy hasn’t made a big movie since 1994 (yeah, The Shadow wasn’t good…but it was big…kind of). However, this homage to private investigator film noir looks violent as hell, and entertaining.
Thomas Jane, Doug Hutchison, Ving Rhames, Leland Orser
April 1

The Escapist – Directed by Rupert Wyatt, Written by Rupert Wyatt and Daniel Hardy
This IFC picture debuted at Sundance last year, and has a limited release next month. Brian Cox is in prison, learns his daughter is terminally ill, and plots a daring escape attempt to make things right before she dies. IFC generally has strong writing, weak direction, and average acting, but I’ll always give them a shot. And if you can’t find it in theaters, I’m sure it’s already on Comcast OnDemand.
Brian Cox, Damian Lewis, Joseph Fiennes
April 3

Fast and Furious – Directed by Justin Lin, Written by Chris Morgan
So the original cast is back, and so is the Charger that made me cream my pants in 2001. The preview looks promising after two horrible sequels. However, both the director and writer have only been a part of Tokyo Drift, the most pointless one in the series. This is a studio film, and I’m really hoping they keep the cars flashy, the women naked, and the story simple.
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster
April 3

Gigantic – Directed by Matt Aselton, Written by Matt Aselton and Adam Nagata
Newbie writer and director, but a solid cast. Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine) heads this strange story about a mattress salesman’s plan to adopt a Chinese baby. Goodman looks hilarious, but there’s substance to it. I’m intrigued.
Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman, Jane Alexander, Ed Asner
April 3

Lymelife – Directed by Derick Martini, Written by Derick and Steven Martini
I’m not sure how virgin director Derick Martini got Martin Scorcese to executive produce this, but if Marty signed off on it, it’s fine with me. The cast is interesting if not solid, with an Imaginary Heroes kind of feel to it. Not a big Jill Hennessy fan, but Rory Culkin seems to know what he’s doing already (at least he’s staying away from Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).
Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Kieran Culkin, Rory Culkin, Timothy Hutton, Cynthia Nixon, Emma Roberts
April 8

Observe and Report – Written and Directed by Jody Hill
It could very well be Paul Blart II, but Rogen’s random humor coupled with Faris’ offbeat ridiculousness could turn the rent-a-cop genre legitimate…yeah, not so much.
Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Michael Pena, Ray Liotta
April 10

American Violet – Directed by Tim Disney, Written by Bill Haney
Based on a true story, newcomer Nicole Beharie plays a single mom living in Texas around the 2000 elections. Her apartment complex is raided by police task forces, and she is jailed on dubious drug-trafficking charges. She then attempts to flip it on the system. The plot screams Lifetime film, but the preview screams Oscar oversight.
Nicole Beharie, Will Patton, Alfre Woodard, Michael O’Keefe, Charles Dutton, Tim Blake Nelson, Xzibit
April 17

Crank: High Voltage – Written and Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor
The tagline says it all: “He was dead…then he got better.” Are you fucking serious? The first movie, although possibly entertaining (Amy Smart getting pounded in the middle of China town was pretty sweet), was freaking retarded. And now, after falling out of a helicopter to certain death, Jason Statham is brought back to life, but he still has to keep moving. Did he learn nothing from the Transporter movies? This film is insulting to America, but saddening to me, because America is actually gonna go see this, count on it.
Jason Statham, Amy Smart
April 17

Sleep Dealer – Directed by Alex Rivera, Written by Alex Rivera and David Riker
In the future, America is a militarized state, and our borders are closed. However, we still rely on foreign workers through a network of virtual labor and digital communication. Three young people in Mexico, fed up with the lack of personal contact, attempt to break down the borders of society. Looks pretty flashy for coming out of Mexico, no big names, but the premise is interesting.
Leonor Varela, Jacob Vargas, Luis Fernando Pena
April 17

State of Play – Directed by Kevin Macdonald, Written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Tony Gilroy
Mixed feelings. Kevin Macdonald directed The Last King of Scotland, which I really liked. Tony Gilroy, even though he only wrote this one, directed Michael Clayton, which I fucking hated. But with the exception of Ben Affleck, this is like an Oscar Allstar team, and the whole “government cover-up of a politician’s indiscretions” never seems to get old. That, and I would love to see Gladiator beat the shit out of Gigli.
Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Robin Wright Penn, Jeff Daniels, Viola Davis
April 17

The Informers – Directed by Gregor Jordan, Written by Bret Easton Ellis and Nicholas Jarecki
Gregor Jordan hasn’t really done anything of note yet, but Ellis wrote the novels American Psycho and Rules of Attraction, both great stories and cult classic films. The Informers is another 1980’s period piece about the intersecting lives of L.A.’s elite and down-and-out. Welcome back, Mickey, we missed you.
Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke, Winona Ryder, Jon Foster, Amber Heard, Rhys Ifans, Brad Renfro
April 24

Mutant Chronicles – Directed by Simon Hunter, Written by Philip Eisner
This has nothing to do with the X-men, just so we’re clear. Yes, there is a mutant army threatening life as we know it. Themes of totalitarian religious states and mankind’s struggle to survive overplay Ron Perlman’s weak Celtic accent, and Thomas Jane is a badass.
Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki, Pras, John Malkovich, Sean Pertwee
April 24

Powder Blue – Written and Directed by Timothy Linh Bui
This film got a lot of hype on the internet when it was rumored that Jessica Biel, who plays a stripper, will finally be getting naked (stupid WB and 7th Heaven). However, after all the hoopla, it may not get a wide theatrical release, if it sees the box office at all. I’m hoping this isn’t another “Nothing but the Truth”, we’ll see.
Forest Whitaker, Ray Liotta, Patrick Swayze, Jessica Biel, Lisa Kudrow, Kris Kristofferson
April 24

The Soloist – Directed by Joe Wright, Written by Susannah Grant
Just because I am including this film again, it will be pushed back to August, because Christopher McQuarrie is out to get me (don’t ask). Oscar nominee Joe Wright’s rigid, Oscar-cock-sucking style may have relaxed with this true story of a musical genius living on the streets. I just really want Downey to win an Oscar.
Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx, Catherine Keener, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Stephen Root
April 24

First and foremost, we would like to thank all of you who supported us on Sunday and followed the live blog. It was a big day for Sexy Gypsy, and it really set the bar high.

Unfortunately, the Academy set the bar pretty low for hosting this year. Hugh Jackman, while slightly entertaining and charismatic at first, bored us to death with the constant musical numbers. This is the Oscars, dammit, we didn’t watch the Grammies for a reason. Also, the new format for actor awards runs a little long for our taste. Do we really need past winners standing up there talking one by one about the nominees for this year? We know Heath Ledger was an amazing Joker, do we really need Kevin Kline to tell us again? And if Cuba Gooding Jr. wants to be on stage at the red carpets, maybe he should be in a movie that doesn’t suck ass.

So despite some random last minute decisions, Sexy Gypsy did pretty well in predicting the Oscars this year. Our preview was right on the money for the big categories, even if our ballots weren’t. Unlike past years, there were no really big upsets. So let’s recap:

Best Picture: We all knew that Slumdog Millionaire was going to sweep the awards again. Milk was an amazing contender, but couldn’t stand up to the sheer brilliance in editing, direction, sound, and writing that Slumdog brought. Well deserved.

Best Director: David Fincher and Ron Howard have done better work. Stephen Daldry’s presence, not only in this category, but also in every other category The Reader was nominated, was a ridiculous, unwarranted usurping of Sam Mendes’ rightful seat with Revolutionary Road. Van Sant gave him a good run for the money, but Danny Boyle couldn’t be ignored any longer. Well deserved.

Best Actor: Minus Brad Pitt, this category was stacked. Jenkins, Langella, Penn, and Rourke all gave amazing performances. But it really came down to the latter two, and even though Prop 8 could’ve pushed Penn to the win, he was fantastic, and at least Rourke is again on the radar. Questionable, but well deserved.

Best Actress: Anne Hathaway hasn’t been as typecast as most people believe. Her role in Havoc was enough for us to take her seriously. Unfortunately, she was up against two major actresses (not counting Melissa Leo or Angelina Jolie). However, Streep has had her Oscar recognition, and Winslet was due after so many dead end nominations. Well deserved, wrong film (should have been Revolutionary Road).

Best Supporting Actor: If you read our preview, you know our conspiracy theories in this category. But there was only ever a slight doubt in anyone’s mind that Ledger would walk with this one. His “eclectic” career aside, this was not only his best performance, but one of the best of all time. Hey Downey, why so serious? Well deserved.

Best Supporting Actress: This category wasn’t really stellar, but everyone did a good job in their roles. Amy Adams, however, was definitely a head above the rest, in emotion and in screen time. Predicting this one was disappointing, because we knew Cruz would take it for being involved in an otherwise-not-nominated Woody Allen film. Undeserved.

Other categories of interest

Foreign Language: Waltz with Bashir should’ve taken this, and most people thought it would. Always gotta be on the lookout for the underdog.

Shorts: It is surprising that On the Line or Manon on the Asphalt didn’t take it, considering they were more the Academy’s usual taste, but Toyland was interesting and well edited, and the only WWII film even nominated this year. Also surprising, but definitely exciting, was the Academy’s decision to look past Pixar’s usual animated brilliance and give the Oscar to La Maison en Petits Cubes, the emotional Japanese film with a French name.

Screenplay: Slumdog Millionaire was an amazing adaptation, as shown by its eight wins this year. However, we still believe that, with any other director, the script would have fallen short. Doubt, though sub par in acting and directing, was an amazingly well written film, full of amazing dialogue. Milk was the obvious choice for Original Screenplay. It built and developed all the characters for the actors to round out, and there wasn’t a weak link in the bunch.

Another surprise was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. All three of this film’s awards (Visual Effects, Art Direction, and Makeup) beat out The Dark Knight, which was a thousand times better in all of them. This is either an apology to Fincher for ignoring Zodiac, or an apology to Brad Pitt that he will never, ever, ever be Batman. Robin, maybe, but not The Dark Knight.

Overall, a good year for movies, and a solid Academy Awards ceremony. We will of course be starting this all over again next November, but for now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for the support.

-Sexy Gypsy

Best Picture

Of the five films in this category, only two really have a shot. Frost/Nixon was a great stage adaptation with amazing performances and, while solid, was ultimately compromised by Ron Howard’s lack of technical abilities. The Reader was boring, poorly constructed, and probably the most overrated film in the last 20 years. And Benjamin Button was average at best.

That leaves us with Milk and Slumdog Millionaire. And it’s close.

Milk was perfectly casted, acted and edited. Thankfully, Gus van Sant showed enough restraint not to fuck it up with his usual annoyingly pseudo-artistic direction. Add to that the best performance of Sean Penn’s career and you have a serious contender for Best Picture.

But, unfortunately for Gus van Sant and Milk, 2009 is the year of Slumdog. With great music, flawless direction and screenplay, Slumdog Millionaire has finally brought Danny Boyle to the forefront of cinema. He’s a versatile director who can excel in any genre, and Slumdog’s complex, non-linear story line really allowed him to showcase his skills. The result was a beautifully executed film whose broad appeal, blending of cultures, and surprising rise to recognition puts it over the top.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Slumdog Millionaire

WHO WILL WIN: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actor

Why is Brad Pitt in this category? He gave a much better, rounder performance in A River Runs Through It and is the weak link in this category with his one-note portrayal of Benjamin Button. Richard Jenkins is finally getting the love he deserves, after years of being “that guy”—you recognize him, know he’s in things, but you don’t know his name or why you seem to remember him (if you still don’t know who he is, he’s the dead father in Six Feet Under). Unfortunately, his well-developed performance will be eclipsed by the big three: Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella, and Sean Penn. This will ultimately be decided by politics: the resurrection of Mickey Rourke, the Nixon scandal, or the gay character post-prop 8.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Mickey Rourke
WHO WILL WIN: Sean Penn, because the Academy loves him.

Best Actress

First off, the Academy needs to decide what constitutes a leading role, because Kate Winslet should have been up for Revolutionary Road, not The Reader, both for technical and performance-quality reasons. She’ll probably win, but only because Stephen Daldry is a marketing whore and has been politicking for The Reader like he was Blagojevich selling a Senate seat.

Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie both had great roles, but it was more the writing than they acting that made their characters special. While Angelina Jolie will get a nomination for anything in which she’s not half naked shooting at people, Streep didn’t bring the expected veteran-actress energy to an already well written character—and it fell short.

Melissa Leo in Frozen River was an interesting choice. A small, low-budget, independent film shot in 24 days spawns a Best Actress nomination? But it’s a well-crafted story—solid throughout. As for Melissa Leo’s performance, as good a job as she did, she’s not beating out Streep, let alone Winslet.

Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, deserves credit for nailing her part as a fresh-out-of-rehab junkie—a role often cliched, parodied, and overplayed. Sadly, no one saw Rachel Getting Married. It’s not a great film but Hathaway more than makes up for it (Plus, Tunde from TV on The Radio plays her brother-in-law-to-be!)

WHO SHOULD WIN: Anne Hathaway
WHO WILL WIN: Kate Winslet

Best Supporting Actor

Robert Downey, Jr. is an amazing actor and definitely deserves some fucking recognition. But Tropic Thunder? Really?? It’s picks like this that make people clown the Oscar. Everyone else was solid, but Josh Brolin, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Michael Shannon picked a shitty year to be nominated.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was miscast in the role of Father Flynn, and he did the best he could. Still, his subpar performance paled in comparison to most of his other work. Josh Brolin, though slightly outshone by the rest of the supporting cast, was impressive in Milk. He just seems to have bad luck—going against Daniel Day-Lewis last year, and now Heath Ledger. Michael Shannon had three great scenes, and blew me away in Revolutionary Road. He was the most interesting character in a Sam Mendes movie, which in itself says a lot, and he had a huge impact in his 120 seconds of screen time.

Yet as good as they were, Brolin and Shannon especially, no one is beating Heath Ledger. A solid, completely immersive portrayal of a psychotic clown in a movie that destroyed box offices everywhere? He deserves the award no matter what, and it only helps that he’s dead.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Heath Ledger (but only because he’s dead)
WHO WILL WIN: Heath Ledger (but only because he’s dead)

Best Supporting Actress

How long do you have to be in a film to fulfill the “supporting” criteria? Viola Davis, though very emotional, had one scene in Doubt. However, she was just as memorable as Michael Shannon in her limited screen time. Penelope Cruz didn’t have a much bigger role, and she’s only here because she played a cup full of crazy in a Woody Allen movie, and her crazy wasn’t as good as crazies in the past (Wilkinson in Michael Clayton). But Amy Adams is a head above the rest in this category, and hopefully that’s enough.

Taraji Henson is here just because the Academy loved Benjamin Button, but it wasn’t a great film and she wasn’t all that good in it. Outside of Cruz, she’s the weakest nominee in this category. It was like she played the great-great-grandmother of her character in Hustle and Flow.

Marisa Tomei is the dark horse here. She gave an incredible performance in The Wrestler and she’s still ridiculously hot.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Amy Adams
WHO WILL WIN: Penelope Cruz

Best Director

If you’ve ever read sexy gypsy, you already know our pick for Best Director. Motherfucking Danny Boyle.

Stephen Daldry is now on my shit list for The Reader—even more so for plugging the fuck out of an inferior movie and tricking everyone into thinking it was great. Who the fuck does he think he is, M. Night Shyamalan?

David Fincher is a great director with some amazing movies under his belt, but the travesty of Curious Case of Benjamin Button is not one of them. The sequence with Tilda Swinton and Brad Pitt was the only time you really saw Fincher’s influence, and it was the best part of the film.

Ron Howard is still Hollywood’s golden boy, so it’s not surprising he was nominated for Frost/Nixon. Aside from persistent anachronisms and mishandling of time, Howard preserved the spirit of the stage play and the camera work was excellent.

Gus van Sant finally decided to humble himself and make a solid, consistent film, and is really the only one who could challenge Boyle. The Academy loves him, and could look to make up for robbing him of Best Director in 1997, plus some Prop 8 guilt could come into play. This is definitely a category to watch.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Danny Boyle (with an honorable mention and apology to Sam Mendes)
WHO WILL WIN: Danny Boyle

Conspiracies

Who did Sam Mendes piss off? He is a great filmmakers and Revolutionary Road, though disturbingly depressing, was an amazing film. Camera work, editing, score, acting, screenplay—all great. Yet the Academy left him out of the running and even changed the nomination for Kate Winslet, calling her performance in The Reader a lead—a role which the HFPA considered a supporting a few months ago. I think he’s in the doghouse for some reason, and Michael Shannon’s nomination is an apology. I suspect that, though Ledger has it locked, they might upset everything and give it to Shannon, just to show there’s no hard feelings.

Amy Adams deserves to win best supporting, but everything in Hollywood is political (which could also explain Winslet’s bump to lead role after Daldry’s whoring). My guess is that Cruz could walk with this one because the Academy loves Woody Allen and they’re sorry he made a dumb movie they can’t nominate for anything else.

Again making up for its past mistakes, the Academy has shown major love to Benjamin Button. They want so badly to let Pitt have one, but Babel just wasn’t that good. And Zodiac, Fincher’s first Academy-worthy film, just came out too early for Oscar consideration.

4.) Robert Downey, Jr. has been in some great movies, always does his roles beautifully, and the Academy thinks he’s due for something. But since Charlie Bartlett got impatient and fucked off what could have been a serious, profound ending, he couldn’t get anything for that. And Iron Man was entertaining, but no actor will ever get an Oscar for playing a superhero. Downey’s next film is The Soloist with Jamie Foxx, directed by Joe Wright. It would have been a contender for the Oscars but was pulled from its November release date and slated for early March, 2009. So now it comes down to Tropic Thunder.

Let’s get a couple things straight (no pun intended). I don’t like Sean Penn. I may have liked three or four of his films, but he wasn’t the best part of any of them. I don’t like his acting, his politics, and for those of you readers given to passive sarcasm, no, I don’t like the way he crashes on my couch all the time doing blow with Oliver Stone and eating all my Pringles. I’m also not a big Gus van Sant fan. I think he’s artsy to the point of pretentious, and his handful of good films could have been better.

I loved Milk.

That’s how good it is, how honest and engaging and sympathetic the film comes across. I waited a while to see it (for the aforementioned reasons, not the gay thing…I do live in San Francisco), and I wish I’d seen it weeks ago.

Sean Penn is Harvey Milk. He’s a funny, buoyant, motivated little man who moves from a closet in New York City to San Francisco’s Castro district, the homosexual Mecca of the 1970’s. After his initially cold greeting by businesses and law enforcement, he goes through several failed campaigns before finally being elected City Supervisor, and the country’s first gay official. Shortly thereafter, he becomes the first assassinated gay official (if that spoiled the movie for you, you really should read more). Oddly enough, his murder was more political than homophobic (damn Twinkies, they make us all crazy).

The cast in this film does an amazing job. Not only is Sean Penn outstanding, but James Franco, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna cross the rainbow and give amazing supporting performances. Even Josh Brolin’s drunk, power-hungry, questionable sexuality is solid (check out pictures, he looks exactly like Dan White).

Editing was fantastic (Elliot Graham is also now forgiven for Superman Returns), flowing seamlessly between current film and historic footage of San Francisco circa 1978.

And then there’s Gus. Several trademark shots are present; one long fixed shot from inside a storefront, a panning angle on Penn and Castro Street. His artistic side is also there, flashing campaign slogans on screen, split-screening mass phone calls. However, more than any of his past work, Gus tempered himself, put the flair aside, and made a down to earth, honest, and humble film.

The sequencing of the shots was great too, going from news footage the night of the assassination, to Milk recording his story, and back to the New York subway where it all began.

Harvey Milk’s story is compelling in and of itself; the man was loved by millions, and cherished by an entire city. The fact that two Hollywood heavy-hitters that I can’t stand could get together and make an amazing film like this should tell you something.

Mickey Rourke should be careful; he’s got some stiff competition sneaking up behind him.

Final Grade: A-

So now that we’ve all had a chance to absorb the Oscar nominations, it’s time to start placing bets. We already mentioned that, in the last three years, every Oscar winner for Best Actor and Actress also won the Golden Globe. This year, however, the nominations aren’t even the same. Kate Winslet won Best Actress for Revolutionary Road, but the Academy decided to nominate her for The Reader. Not surprising, but still unfortunate, is the lack of nominations for Sam Mendes and Revolutionary Road. Michael Shannon is the only one who got a nod, with a Best Supporting Actor nomination. We’re still unclear as to why Mendes is absent on the ballot this year, especially when The Reader is up for Best Picture, and Stephen Daldry is up for Best Director (boring movie, and he’s a rookie).

Heath Ledger has a little more competition in this race for Best Supporting Actor, but we’re hoping he gets what’s due him after arguably the best performance of 2008. And kudos must be given to the Academy for calling our bluff in this category. Robert Downey Jr. is up for Best Supporting for Tropic Thunder; we’re still going to complain, but Downey really deserves an award after being overlooked for so long, so the razor blades we promised will not be forthcoming.

On a lighter note, Danny Boyle carried over all of his Golden Globe nominations, and he’s all over the Oscars. With any luck, the Academy will think outside its microscopic box and give credit to the underdog instead of going with the predictable choice (Ron Howard). The only movie to really rival Slumdog Millionaire this year was Milk. Gus van Sant deserves the nomination, maybe the win. The editing wasn’t as complex as Slumdog, but it was still good. And Sean Penn is definitely giving Mickey Rourke a run for his money as Best Actor.

The Supporting categories are also a bit strange, in that several of the nominees had very little screen time in the film. Viola Davis has like two scenes in Doubt. Penelope Cruz wasn’t really in Vicky Cristina Barcelona until the very end. Taraji P. Henson had a slightly bigger role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but it was three hours long, and you didn’t see her that much. Even Michael Shannon only had three scenes in Revolutionary Road. Not that this is a first for the Academy (Tom Wilkinson for Michael Clayton, Ruby Dee for American Gangster), we’re just not sure how you justify giving an Oscar to someone who wasn’t really in the movie.

This year will not be the clash of the titans that last year was, but there are a lot of interesting choices, some standard nominations, and some unexplainable absences. It’s really anyone’s guess, but here at Sexy Gypsy, we’re smarter than everyone else, including the Academy, so be on the lookout for our official Oscar ballot choices next week.

It’s 2009. The Golden Globes have come and gone. Obama is officially president. We can finally put 2008 behind us, right? Wrong. Tomorrow, the Academy will announce its nominees for the 2009 Oscars ceremony on February 22. Which means for the next month, you can add, “So who do you think will win best sound mixing?” to your repertoire of suave pick-up lines.

As we said, we’ve never really paid attention to the Golden Globes. Around this time of year, we’re usually already trying to predict not only the Oscar nominees, but also the winners. However, after the surprising sweeps by Slumdog Millionaire and Kate Winslet, we decided to read up on the HFPA and compare them with the Academy. We found some interesting stuff.

2006 was the year of Crash, at least for the Oscars. Strangely enough, it didn’t even get nominated for a Golden Globe, which went to Brokeback Mountain (over A History of Violence) and Walk the Line (over The Squid and the Whale). If that wasn’t weird enough, George Clooney and Rachel Weisz undeservedly won both awards for best supporting (Syriana and The Constant Gardener respectively), and Ang Lee won both for Brokeback Mountain (also undeserved).

2007 saw some interesting competition. Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You For Smoking, The Departed, Babel, The Queen…the list goes on. The Academy was, if nothing else, consistent in its awards (The Departed won a couple…). The HFPA, on the other hand, gave best picture to Babel and Dreamgirls, the latter actually cleaning up the Golden Globes, with Eddie Murphy winning best supporting actor (Alan Arkin wasn’t even nominated, seriously?) and Jennifer Hudson getting supporting actress in both ceremonies, which is just silly.

2008 was the closest race in recent years, so we can’t be mad at either group. Atonement got the Globe for best picture, No Country for Old Men got the Oscar. Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) won a director Globe, The Coens scored the Oscar. The only travesty was Tilda Swinton winning a best supporting Oscar for Michael Clayton.

What we found interesting was that, in all three years, every Oscar winner for actor and actress also won the Golden Globe. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) in 2006. Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) in 2007. Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) in 2008.

So what will happen in 2009? Will Danny Boyle finally grab the gold? Will Mickey Rourke finally give an acceptance speech (it sure as hell better not be Colin Farrell). Or will the Academy condemn the HFPA for not at least giving Woody Allen or Sean Penn a reach-around for being overrated?

We’ll see tomorrow.
