Turn on the radio.
Nah, Fuck it.
Turn it off.
—Rage Against The Machine, Vietnow (1996)
On my second marriage, Hip Hop’s my first wifey
And for that, we not taking it lightly
If Hip Hop should die, we all die together
If Hip Hop should die before I wake
I’ll laod an extended clip and body ‘em all day
Roll to every station, wreck the DJ
Hip Hop just died this morning
And she’s dead, she’s dead
—Nas, Hip Hop is Dead (2006)
Word. Hip Hop is dead and radio killed her. Maybe we all should have listened to Zach De La Rocha 13 years ago and turned that shit off. Maybe then, she’d still be alive, spitting dope rhymes and making heads bop in neighborhoods all over the world. But instead, we kept feeding it. Now candy-coated bullshit about ice and jewels and money and the fucking club have slowly eclisped the streets. And we let the masses take our music, our art, our culture and distort it. Nas may have said it in 2006, but our lady, Hip Hop, has been dead for a long time.
So now, it is our responsibility to resurrect her, to breathe life back into the music we love. Support the artists that refused to be infected by the cancer that is the music industry. Buy their mixtapes, go to their shows, give them some fucking love. I try to do that here on sexy gypsy, by writing about the overlooked artists, that get no play anywhere else. At least, they never USED to get play anwhere else. This is changing…
A good friend of mine, DJ NecrO-E, has just started a weekly hip hop show on KCPR 91.3 FM in San Luis Obispo. It’s called Hip Hop Resurrection and it’s hot. DJ NecrO-E takes a look at several different branches of Hip Hop past and present, but concentrates on the underground (a lot like sexy gypsy). He hopes putting this amazing music back on the radio will reignite a love for Hip Hop in those who’ve never known the real and make us old Hip Hop heads remember why we were drawn to it in the first place. I love Hip Hop and pray he’s right.
Hip Hop Resurrection debuted last Saturday and sexy gypsy helped put together the playlist. DJ NecrO-E is doing his part to save Hip Hop. What the fuck are you doing about it?
Check out DJ NecrO-E and Hip Hop Resurrection at 2 PM on KCPR 91.3 or listen online here.
